Princess Thorn

A Veni-Yan Cari princess who discovers her heritage and faces the Rat Creature war.

Princess Thorn is a central figure in the Bone saga. She is the granddaughter of the queen of old, as revealed when Kingdok identifies her and Gran'ma Ben as "the queen and crown princess of old" after Thorn slices off his right arm. Thorn is a Veni-Yan Cari, an individual empowered by innate control of "The Dreaming" (the subconscious mental existence of intelligent creatures), and therefore desired by the Hooded One. This volume follows her as she learns secrets from her past and confronts the deepening hostilities between the valley's inhabitants and the Rat Creatures.

Lore & Background

Thorn is the crown princess of old, as identified by Kingdok after she cuts off his right arm. She is a Veni-Yan Cari, meaning she has innate control of "The Dreaming" and is desired by the Hooded One. This is revealed to her by Gran'ma Ben after the fight with Kingdok. Angered that her past was concealed from her, Thorn leaves for Barrelhaven alone. Later, she is visited in her dreams by the Hooded One, who reveals its face like young Gran'ma Ben's. She is saved when Fone Bone wakes her to show her a Rat Creature cub. Thorn becomes furious at the sight, remembering how her parents were killed by Kingdok, and threatens to kill the cub if Fone Bone doesn't kick it out. She later decides to leave Barrelhaven and return to the farmhouse, but collapses with exhaustion on the way. In a dream, the Great Red Dragon convinces her not to run away. She returns to stop Phoney Bone from killing the dragon, showing the townsfolk smoke from the advancing Rat Creature army, and then drives the Rat Creatures back with four Veni Yan monks.

Fone Bone wakes her with a Rat Creature cub; she threatens to kill it, remembering her parents' death. She later tries to return to the farmhouse but collapses. The Great Red Dragon convinces her not to run away. She returns to stop Phoney from killing the dragon, shows the townsfolk the Rat Creature army, and leads the defense with four Veni Yan monks.
